Holiday (English Task)

Holiday. 2 weeks of holiday.

Last holiday I finally understand the relativity that once Einstein said “when you’re waiting for someone or something,  minutes feels like hours. But if you find yourself sit cozy and fine place with a beautiful girl, hours feels like minutes”. I don’t know the exact word but that should give you an image. You know what I mean.

I really don’t feel it like 2 weeks.

I need more.

And a month is still not enough if I always think that this place represent The Inferno like in Dante Alighieri’s famous poetry The Divine Comedy.

Now I have to write down things that I’ve done in holiday. I’m glad I must write down things that I’ve done than things that I haven’t done in holiday because it will took hours to finish it. I’m just a simple kid with a simple mind.

Well actually I prefer to write down about Satans, Devils, Beelzebubs but yeah, let’s get started.

The Inspiring Story of General Soedirman (English Task)

General Soedirman was born in Rembang, Central Java. “He was the military commander of Indonesian forces during the country’s fight for independence from the Dutch in the 1940. During the Japanese occupation of Indonesia” he joined PETA. It was the national army, promoted by the Japanese. He got his first military education there. After that, he was elected to be Batalyon commandeer at Kroya. After Indonesia reached their independence, he was succeeded to disarmed the rest of Japanese soldiers at Banyumas. In December 1945, he got the honor to be the General. The most important thing is, he didn’t gain his General position through military academy or else, but because of his loyalty. Can you imagine how loyal he was that his loyalty can give him such a great honor like that.

During much of the next five years he was sick with tuberculosis, but he still led several guerrilla actions against the Dutch. At first the president, Mr.Soekarno didn’t allow him to lead the guerillas, Soekarno asked him to stay in the city. But he didn’t do what Soekarno said because of his responsibility as the leader. This the best part of his life that makes me adore him a lot. He ignored his health for the freedom of Indonesian people. I rarely find a person like him.

Then with all the power he still had, he departed from city to lead the guerrilla war. It was like seven months, he moved from one place to another, from mount to mount in his sickness, while he didn’t have any medicine. But he always said to his soldiers to keep up their spirits and instructed them like there’s nothing happening with himself. But finally he got to leave the war area because he could not lead the soldiers directly with himself in the field anymore. But he was a great person, the soldiers needed him. So, although he cannot see the Dutch face to face, still, his thoughts are always needed.

General Soedirman died in January 1950 when he was 34 years old. He was buried in Heroes’ Cemetery in Semaki, Yogyakarta. He received the title of National Hero of Indonesia as an Independence Defender Hero.

The Shawshank Redemption (English Movie Review Task)

In 1947, banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover, and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences at Shawshank State Penitentiary. Andy quickly befriends contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman), an inmate serving a life sentence. Red procures a rock hammer for Andy, allowing him to create small stone chess pieces. Red later gets him a large poster of Rita Hayworth, followed in later years by images of Marilyn Monroe and Raquel Welch. Andy works in the prison laundry, but is regularly assaulted by the“bull queer” gang “the Sisters” and their leader, Bogs (Mark Rolston).

In 1949, Andy overhears the brutal chief guard Byron Hadley (Clancy Brown) complaining about taxes on a forthcoming inheritance and informs him about a financial loophole. After another vicious assault by the Sisters nearly kills Andy, Hadley severely beats Bogs resulting in Bogs being sent to another prison. Andy is not attacked again. Warden Samuel Norton (Bob Gunton) meets with Andy and reassigns him to the prison library to assist elderly inmate Brooks Hatlen (James Whitmore), a pretext for Andy to manage financial duties for the prison. His advice and expertise are soon sought by other guards at Shawshank and from nearby prisons. Andy begins writing weekly letters to the state government for funds to improve the decrepit library.

In 1954, Brooks is freed on parole, but unable to adjust to the outside world after 50 years in prison, he hangs himself. Andy receives a library donation that includes a recording of The Marriage of Figaro. He plays an excerpt over the public address system, resulting in his receiving solitary confinement. After his release, Andy explains that he holds onto hope as something that the prison cannot take from him, but Red dismisses the idea. In 1963, Norton begins exploiting prison labor for public works, profiting by undercutting skilled labor costs and receiving kickbacks. He has Andy launder the money using the alias “Randall Stephens”.

In 1965, Tommy Williams (Gil Bellows) is incarcerated for burglary. He joins Andy’s and Red’s circle of friends, and Andy helps him pass his General Educational Development (G.E.D.) examinations. In 1966, after hearing the details of Andy’s case, Tommy reveals that an inmate at another prison claimed responsibility for an identical murder, suggesting Andy’s innocence. Andy approaches Norton with this information, but the warden refuses to listen. Norton places Andy in solitary confinement and has Hadley murder Tommy, under the guise of an escape attempt. Andy refuses to continue with the scam, but Norton threatens to destroy the library and take away his protection and preferential treatment. After Andy is released from solitary confinement, he tells Red of his dream of living in Zihuatanejo, a Mexican Pacific coastal town. While Red shrugs it off as being unrealistic, Andy instructs him, should he ever be freed, to visit a specific hayfield near Buxton to retrieve a package.

The next day at roll call, upon finding Andy’s cell empty, an irate Norton throws one of Andy’s rocks at the poster of Raquel Welch hanging on the wall. The rock tears through the poster, revealing a tunnel that Andy had dug with his rock hammer over the previous two decades. The previous night, Andy escaped through the tunnel and the prison’s sewage pipe with Norton’s ledger, containing details of the money laundering. While guards search for him the following morning, Andy, posing as Randall Stephens, visits several banks to withdraw the laundered money. Finally, he sends the ledger and evidence of the corruption and murders at Shawshank to a local newspaper. The police arrive at Shawshank and take Hadley into custody, while Norton commits suicide to avoid arrest.

After serving 40 years, Red receives parole. He struggles to adapt to life outside prison and fears he never will. Remembering his promise to Andy, he visits Buxton and finds a cache containing money and a letter asking him to come to Zihuatanejo. Red violates his parole and travels to Fort Hancock, Texas to cross the border to Mexico, admitting he finally feels hope. On a beach in Zihuatanejo, he finds Andy, and the two friends are happily reunited.

The Shawshank Redemption (English Task)

English Task : Death Valley’s ‘Sailing Stones’

For years, scientists have been puzzled by the mysterious “sailing stones” of Death Valley.

Located in a remote area of California’s Death Valley National Park, the heavy stones appear to move across the dried lake bed known as Racetrack Playa, leaving a trail behind them in the cracked mud.

The rocks’ apparent movement has been blamed on everything from space aliens and magnetic fields to pranksters. But no one has actually seen the rocks move, which only adds to the mystery.

“It’s very quiet out there, and it’s very open — and you tend to have the playa to yourself,” park ranger Alan van Valkenburg told Smithsonian.com. “And the longer you stay out there, it just takes on this incredible sense of mystery.”

Scientists have tried to solve the puzzle of the sailing stones for decades. Some researchers thought that dust devils might move the rocks, some of which weigh as much as 700 lbs. (318 kilograms).

Other researchers believed the strong winds that frequently whip across the vast lake bed could cause the rocks to slide across the ground. These and other theories were eventually disproved, leaving scientists without an explanation.

In some cases the rocks’ trails were measured to be as long as 820 feet (250 meters), according to Slate.com. Some of the trails formed a graceful curve, while other trails created a straight line, then an abrupt shift to the left or right, which further baffled researchers.

From outer space to Death Valley

In 2006, Ralph Lorenz, a NASA scientist investigating weather conditions on other planets, took an interest in Death Valley. Lorenz was particularly keen on comparing the meteorological conditions of Death Valley to those near Ontario Lacus, a vast hydrocarbon lake on Titan, a moon of Saturn.

But while investigating Death Valley, he became intrigued by the enigmatic sailing stones of Racetrack Playa.

Lorenz developed a kitchen-table model — using an ordinary Tupperware container — to show how the rocks might glide across the surface of the lake bed.

“I took a small rock and put it in a piece of Tupperware, and filled it with water so there was an inch of water with a bit of the rock sticking out,” Lorenz told Smithsonian.com.

After putting the container in the freezer, Lorenz ended up with a small slab of ice with a rock embedded in it. By placing the ice-bound rock in a large tray of water with sand at the bottom, all he had to do was gently blow on the rock to get it to move across the water.

And as the ice-embedded rock moved, it scraped a trail in the sand at the tray’s bottom. Lorenz devised his clever experiment by researching how the buoyancy of ice can cause large rocks, when encased in ice, to move by floating along tidal beaches in the Arctic Sea.

Preferring mysteries to science

Lorenz’s research team calculated that under certain winter conditions in Death Valley, enough water and ice could form to float the rocks across the muddy bottom of Racetrack Playa in a light breeze, leaving a trail in the mud as the rocks moved.

Nonetheless, some visitors to Death Valley seem to prefer more occult explanations for the sailing stones.

“People always ask, ‘What do you think causes them to move?’ But if you try to explain, they don’t always want to hear the answers,” van Valkenburg said. “People like a mystery — they like an unanswered question.”

English Task ( Student Leader Speech)

A Leader, is the one who stand in the frontline, guiding his people to find better things than before. A leader is a torch barrier, who guide his men from the darkness into the light of happiness and enjoyment. A leader is the one who speak for his men, who judge by thinking about the risk that came from his judgement for him and his people. A leader, also the one who can bring up peace, or chaos.

From daily life problems we all know that a leader is expected to listen to his people and guide them to a better good. It’s simple but hard criteria for someone who want to be a leader. Some leader they listen to their men but didn’t act, and some can be so selfish that though he is always right and don’t need other people’s idea and some leader is both. A leader came from the election of his people and whatever he do, whatever he done, should not be done without the judgement of his people. A leader should not ever forget that he can be ruling, sitting in a nice comfy room without the voice of his people. A leader should not forget, that he used to be among the people but he is given the opportunity to guide his people to a better good. He is the hope of the people.

I know that I’m not the smartest, not the brightess, not the strongest person that you know. But I know what I can do. I listen. I realized that I’m nothing without you all, so I need you. We all need each other. I’m not the smartest but I listen, I’m not the brightess but I listen. All I do is I listen and I act for you all. I chose by you to be the voice of you all and that’s exactly what I’m gonna do.

Some leader on election will say what they gonna do, whan they gonna bring up, what is their mission, what is their will. But for me, my mission depends on you all, my will depends on you all. What you all want and hope is my mission to make it true. Your idea is my idea. Like I say before that I’m not the strongest, I’m weak. My power is less then you when I become a leader. Still the power of a people is greater than its people. Together we can be strong and we can be united. All I hope when I become a leader is I hope you all want to follow me in my journey to fine a greater good, and I hope, I want you all to leave me, when I guide you to bad things. And one thing that I won’t forget when I become a leader, is you all choose me, and I’m only here because of you all.
